Great article! I recall a time when as a product manager I had to make a "redesign" decision and exactly cause of the customer's muscle memory (for old design) and discomfort of using something brand new - I had to make a call and pivot the design roll-out to be "staged". Basically to go from Design A to Design F gradually overtime, changing design bit by bit. Than through a mirror effect (when we think we did not change by looking at ourselves in the mirror) the new design landed without concerns (but took us 1 year)
